Custom-painted By Kilian bottles, courtesy of Sophie Matisse

We've been reading all about the custom-painted bottles by Sophie Matisse for By Kilian that launch at the end of this month. If you get American Vogue, you might have seen this but otherwise there only seems to be tiny snippets on perfume blogs at the moment.

They are empty By Kilian bottles, hand-painted by Matisse's great grand-daughter. They're limited edition with only a tiny quantity being painted (a girl can only do so many bottles herself).

The whole idea seems to fly in the face of the current economic climate, such a change from just one year ago, when excess and unnecessary extravagance where de rigeur, when hand-painted, empty perfume bottles selling for more 1K a pop wouldn't sound strange. But, then again, there are rumours that the super rich' have recession-proofed themselves, so maybe there is still a market after all, just much smaller.

But they are, pretty aren't they? If you can buy one (contact By Kilian now) then you can fill them with By Kilian. I've read pretty mixed reviews about the range but maybe you could fill them with another favourite scent?

FYI: By Kilian is a small range of scents created by the heir to the Hennesy dynasty. It's carried in shops like Aedes de Venustas and Fred Segal Beauty. The range includes Prelude to Love, Love, Beyond Love, Liaisons Dangereuses, Cruel Intentions, A Taste of Heaven, Straight to Heaven. Funny that... Liaisons Dangereuses is the original version of the movie Cruel Intentions.
